We love it when spring turns into summer here at Tribe Hair Co. But, we don’t love the humidity that comes with the warm weather. There’s nothing worse than spending all morning styling your hair just to have your whole look become frizzy the second you step outside. We know how frustrating it can be dealing with frizzy hair due to humid weather, so we’ve provided some tips that will help you keep your locks tamed even during the most humid summer days.
1.Use an anti-frizz serum
Using a serum on wet hair designed to combat frizz can help provide an extra boost of hydration. We love the No. 7 Bonding Oil from Olaplex and the Straight Blow Dry cream from Bumble and bumble. These products can help tame frizzy hair and keep things smooth in super humid weather. Apply the recommended amount of serum to your strands right after you get out of the shower before blow-drying and styling. Finish your blowout by running a flatiron over your hair to lock in the sleekness for the rest of the day.
2. Keep your hair up
The easiest way to keep your hair tame in humid conditions is to throw it up into an easy updo. Curly hair is especially prone to frizziness due to humidity, and putting your curls up into a loose topknot can help keep your hair from expanding à la Monica Geller on vacation in Friends. A loose braid or bun will also help keep your hair out of your face and off of your neck during those extra hot summer days.
3. Moisturize with shea butter & oils
Keeping your locks moisturized is the key to keeping the frizz away. Coconut oil, whipped shea butter, and black castor oil are all great sealants for thick hair. A small amount goes a long way, and you can simply apply a little bit before heading out the door to lock in your style. You want to keep the outermost layer of your hair strands flat to protect from humidity, and moisturizing oils can help smooth this layer after you’ve styled your look.
4. Look for anti-frizz shampoo & conditioner
Many anti-frizz products contain silicone, which can put a damper on volume. Look for smoothing shampoos and conditioners that are silicone-free, like those from Olaplex or Bumble and bumble. Applying a leave-in smoothing treatment after washing your hair can also help keep things smooth for longer.
5. Work with your natural hair textures
It’s inevitable that there will be some days that there’s not enough time to style your hair the way you might want to. In humid weather, your hair wants to return to its natural texture and can become frizzy in the process of absorbing water from the air. If you have naturally curly hair, using a straightener might not be worth the time and can dry out your hair, causing even more frizz. Opt for a simple style that embraces your natural hair texture and finalize your look with a holding spray, like this favorite from Bumble & bumble.
6. Dry your hair with a super-absorbent towel
Stepping out into humid weather with wet hair is like setting off a frizz-bomb; your hair attempts to dry in a wet-air environment, which can cause problems. Try to remove as much water as possible from your hair after you shower and blow it out if possible, or let it dry inside where it’s cool and dry before stepping outdoors. Use a microfiber towel to squeeze as much water as you can from your wet hair. Note: don’t rough up your wet hair – your head’s not a bowling ball! Squeezing will improve texture and help reduce damage.
7. Try a keratin treatment
A keratin treatment is the ultimate time-saver if you struggle with frizzy hair due to humidity, or even if you want to save time styling your hair in the morning. A keratin treatment or Brazilian blowout can help keep your locks smooth and shiny for longer after you’ve left the salon and can cut your styling time in half. 8. Use gel & other holding products
If you want to make sure your style holds up in the humidity, your best bet is to use gel or hairspray to keep your hair in place all day long. A lightweight hairspray, like the Curl Anti-Humidity Gel-Oil from Bumble & bumble, can help keep your hair smooth but still flowy and touchable. Gel has a stronger hold that can help keep curly hair in place. Tip from the pros: tame flyaways using an unused toothbrush spritzed with hairspray. Simply brush over flyaways and seal the look by going over your hair lightly with a smoothing spray or holding hairspray.
